Perch Base took the USS Phoenix float to the Sierra Verde Elementary School for a static display on Thursday, November 10, 2022.
Sierra Verde, a Science, Technology, Engineering And Math (STEAM) school, conducted a Veterans Appreciation Day program.
They fed us breakfast then held an assembly to show their appreciation for Veterans and their patriotism. They really treated us like VIPs!

I swear we didn't take in any balloons!
(Even though it may sound strange, this is actually to protect anyone from an allergic reaction to latex.)

The Perch Base members came in early, before the students arrived for class, to setup the USS Phoenix (SSN-702) float.
(l-r:) Chuck Luna, Chris Gahan, Carl Miner, Don Unser, Joe Trotter, & George Woods
As usual, Dan Marks, the Webmaster, is not in the photo because he was taking the picture.

The static display included an EAB (Emergency Air Breathing apparatus) that we used to prevent smoke inhalation during firefighting or air contamination events.

We also displayed a Steinke Hood, used to escape from a sunken submarine.

Joe Trotter displayed a sample of a "Family Gram." Although we couldn't sent messages to our family while underway, the boat could occasionally receive messages from family members, although they were limited to 15 words and were censored prior to being sent.

This is the actual inclinometer, removed from the USS Phoenix upon decommissioning, that showed the degrees of dive or rise.

The students then escorted us into the assembly. We felt like Admirals being brought aboard by sideboys.

Colonel Bill Edwards (retired) was the Keynote speaker. Bill gave a fine presentation on being a veteran that was able to be understood by all the students at the various grade levels.

Bill served during Operation Iraqi Freedom and Operation New Dawn. Although he has since retired from the Army, Bill still writes articles related to the security industry.
