Herb enlisted in 1960 and qualified in submarines in 1961 aboard the USS Baya (AGSS-318). In 1962, he left USS Baya and
went through nuclear training, including assignment as a reactor operator instructor at the A1W prototype in Idaho Falls
from 1963 to 1965, and then on to the USS Dace (SSN-607) as a reactor operator from 1965 to 1966.
Herb was Honorably Discharged from the Navy in 1966 as an ETR2(SS), where he returned to Portland, Oregon and subsequently
became an air traffic controller.
He was a member of USSVI since 2008 when he joined the Blueback Base in Portland and then Perch Base in 2009. Herb was more
than simply a member, as he served as our Perch Base Secretary from 2013 through 2014 and our Base Storekeeper from 2016 through 2018.
Herb will be cremated and interned at the national cemetery at a later date. We will issue a Flash Traffic when we have more information.
