Construction
At long last construction of the Arizona Silent Service Memorial (ASSM) is finally underway. The trapezoidal base and surfacing submarine modules are being built off site and will be transported to the memorial site for installation and finishing when the construction site at Wesley Bolin Plaza is ready.
The ASSM Foundation Committee had a site meeting with Sunland Asphalt & Const., and, Neil Urban from the Arizona Department of Administration (ADOA) on January 24, 2020. We reviewed our site plans which are 95% complete and Neil provided us some excellent feedback and we should be able to fine‑tune our final plans and submit them to the state within the next two weeks. Once this is done, Neil said they should be able to turn it around and give us approval within two weeks. As soon as the ADOA gives us their approval, we want to have a Groundbreaking Ceremony. We must apply for a permit for this and all future events, which all need to be approved by the ADOA. All bureaucratic red tape but very necessary for the process.
In our site meeting with Neil Urban, we were informed that we will have very limited access to the memorial site when
the State Legislature is in session. We can have access only on nights and weekends. Our construction timeline will be
4-6 weeks. The legislative session ends in late spring or early summer at which time we will complete construction.
Our Dedication Ceremony will most likely be pushed back to fall to avoid the intense summer heat. We will keep you
updated accordingly.
We are still seeking funding for the memorial construction and subsequent activities. Our Memorial Pavers will be
installed at the end of the construction process, so please continue to reach out to your friends, relatives and
business associates and let them know about our project. Memorial Pavers are a great way to honor friends and loved ones.
We will be announcing a "Construction Special" for Memorial Pavers on the ASSM website at:
www.arizonasilentservicememorial.org.
If you have already purchased a Memorial Paver or have funded one of our ASSM sponsorship items, you will receive
another update. Tim Moore has a Donor’s List he uses to send out ASSM progress updates. If you have not purchased a
Memorial Paver, now is the time to do it. We would like all Perch Base members to participate in building this memorial
that honors all submariners. We would definitely love to add all your names to our donor’s list. Don’t miss out!

UPDATE: 06/05/2020
ASSM One (Major) Step Closer!
The Arizona Silent Service Memorial completed an important step toward reality. The Arizona
Department of Administration, the Arizona Historical Advisory Commission, and State of Arizona
approved the engineering and code reviews submitted earlier this year.
The next step will be to have a construction planning meeting in the near future to put together
a construction timeline. Previous discussions with the State of Arizona determined that placement
at Wesley Bolin Plaza in front of the Capital Building would only be permitted while the State House
and Senate are out of session. The Legislature adjourned on May 26 for the remainder of the year, which
should permit construction to start anytime soon and might be completed in time to dedicate the Memorial
near Veterans Day.

08/17/2020. Not a lot of obvious progress, but they have been busy! All the channels in the masonry block wall have been filled with concrete to make it a solid structure (not to mention the vertical rebar and horizontal rebar that was placed every two courses during placement.) The drainpipe is also visible along the fence.

The Arizona Silent Service Memorial was transported from Nate Decker's studio, The Bloc Project, in Anthem, AZ
to its permanent location at Wesley Bolin Memorial Plaza on Thursday, August 27, 2020.
The final construction steps, including placing the pavers is expected to be completed over the next couple weeks.
The official dedication ceremony will be April 17, 2021, but it will be open to the public as soon as it is completed.
